Hello Everybody,
As this last week has revealed more of the severity of the situation
along the Gulf Coast, our thoughts and heartfelt prayers have gone
out daily to the afflicted. For the most part the worst of the
immediate suffering within the City of New Orleans seems to have been
addressed in terms of attending to the massive population of
survivors and getting them out of harms way. In these catastrophic
situations it's nearly impossible to anticipate the strength and fury
of Mother Nature. And so it is my hope that this project will be a
redemptive work of compassion, light, hope and optimism,...

 Yup, our very own DJ Mel is back at the Firehouse this Thurs. Sept. 8th to spin her favorite groovin'est, swingin'est tunes from 10-11p. DJs Roheven and Brian (just back from the Dominican Republic) bookend her set.
Don't forget, our NEW Sept. Swing Class Series for both the Firehouse and the Kava Lounge are scheduled to start this week. While gas prices have continued to skyrocket, we're actually reducing our dance class package rates. Learn to swing dance in a fun and affordable way!

Saturday, September 10th, Zydeco Dance & Fund raiser @ War Memorial Building, Balboa Park with special guests from NOLA being temporarily housed in the SDSU Gym after Katrina devastated their homes (Thanks to Craig Abernathy, they are being bused to our dance and will receive free admission). Free dance lessons, live band from Louisiana too.
Special Raffle Drawing and Gumbo Dinner to raise money for Louisiana Flood Victims. Chef Joann is preparing a dinner of gumbo, red beans and rice, corn bread and salad. Dinner will cost $10 and all the proceeds from the dinner will be donated. Come hungry, dance, have dinner and help support our Louisiana cousins.Members are encouraged to bring a dessert to add to the table.
There will be many prizes given away for Saturday's drawing !!! This is the Bon Temps next 2nd Sat. Dance at the War Memorial Building, Balboa Park (great wood dance floor). The band is T'Lou and the Red Hot Zydeco Band. All the details...

Dearest friends,
As I write this letter very early in the morning on August 31st, 2005, the television is on, showing a continuing stream of images that recount the massive devastation across the Southern Gulf Coast and Midwestern United States. Her name was Katrina, and she came to our shores on Sunday, August 28th, 2005, bearing gifts of death, destruction, and unspeakable sorrow to millions of our brothers and sisters.
Much like the catastrophic tsunami that released its fury on the residence of the Southeast Asian coast last December, this storm has stolen peace of mind and light heartedness from those affected, and left nothing but pain and suffering in her wake. But unless you’ve been living under a rock or on a seriously secluded vacation since this last weekend, you know all this to be self evident. Hiya Kids!
Just a short note to let you all know that we will be playing at Tio Leo's this Friday September 2nd. I would say start time is at 9:00pm but to tell the truth it never seems to really get going until 9:30pm. However you could always come early and have a taco and a nice cold gin and tonic before the show. So please come on down have a spin or two on the dance floor. We promise to mix up the tempos and make sure everyone has a swell time!!

This 2 disc set includes ALL class reviews and competitions as well as an awesome introduction that was edited by Seaniemo as well as a bloopers section. Watching the footage is getting me excited for next year already.

Dennis Hong Guest DJs at the Firehouse this Thursday!

 Dennis was DA man. Back in the day, when swing was the in-THING (circa 1998-2000), he was a regular swing DJ in the San Diego/Orange County area participating in two of SoCal's most legendary DJ battles: The Original Battle of the DJ's - Part IV against Reuben Brown at the old Memories in Anaheim and The Battle of the San Diego Swing DJs against Ron Bloom at the old Rocket at Vasa Hall.
Since then, he has gotten his doctorate in biology and has become a masterful public speaker and professional drinker. We are happy to have him back at the Firehouse this Thursday to spin a few tunes for old times sake! DJ Roheven bookends his set.

We had an INCREDIBLE time at our performance. The energy was sky high and we passed out almost 500 flyers.

"LINDY BY THE BAY" is a free Lindy Hop dance venue on the boardwalk behind the Hilton San Diego Resort on Mission Bay Drive. Donations to help cover costs are appreciated. Water is provided. Music is DJ'd. The sound system is great. Get there around 5:00 at the Bayside Terrace for happy hour or dinner.
Doug Silton is a world class instructor/dancer. He is a great DJ too. More information about Doug can be found on his website.
Directions: From I-5, take the "Clairemont Drive" exit. Go one block west to "Mission Bay Drive" (4 way stop sign). Make a left (south) and the "Hilton San Diego Resort" is on your right about 1/2 mile down. There's lots of parking on the street in front of the Hotel, or in the public parking lots on each side of the hotel. You can park in the hotel parking lot if there's room and security's not out front screening people, which they do when...
